2001 elite exhaust??

Post by Pierce ramsay »

Hi guys. I have a 2001 honda elite sa50, i am running a 50mm bore, upgraded trans, 9:1 gears, 24mm OKO carb, and so on.... i have reached about 50mph I'm thinking that my STOCK exhaust is restricting me a bit. Heres what i'm looking for, i need a cheap (under $100 please), quiet and good exhaust for the new bore i have, i have been running this set up for about 2weeks and its kind of dissapointing. Also if you scooter guys could point me in the right direction for a air filter that will fit the back of the carb, as i am using a mt. dew can i cut to fit it would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much!!

Greetings:

There's no question the stock pipe can restrict RPM, but that may be the only reason you haven't fried your shiny new 50mm Big-Bore. 9:1 is much too short, and you can't get much above 55 without really high RPMs. 9:1s will go 49 with all-stock power, reaching peak speed just about where the variator maxes out. Going faster is all about RPM, and with the variator maxed and too little wind drag, your bore is at risk.

Even with the stock muffler, your engine has the power to drive the 8.44s to 58 or so, and the 7.97s might just be a better match at something like 62. If you get a pipe and let the engine rev to the moon, your gears will be too low.

You can get any Cycle dealer to order a UNI 2" pod filter and have it in a couple of days for $20. Be sure to oil it, then re-check your jetting via plug reads or (better) a CHT gauge.

JiangWayne has several pretty good new pipes for a lower-rpm setup in your price range, or someone here can sell you something used. I strongly recommend you begin with adequate gearing.

One more question is the 18x39 equal the 7.97 final drive gears? Should i use a differnt spark plug than the BR6HSA?? i have heard talk about using a br8hsa for 50mm bores because there cooler and will be less like'ly to sieze the bore?

Yes use the #8 plug.

42/12 (number of teeth on primary gears) =3.5:1 ratio

39/18 (number of teeth on secondary gears) = 2.166:1 ratio

3.5 x 2.166 =7.583:1 Overall ratio

OK 28mm exhaust it is. I went for a ride last night and she did great at half throttle, so i thought just for kicks with my new 24mm carb i would go WOT but when i did this she bogged down, and almost died! what happened? is that the exhaust not beeing able to take enuf of the burn fuel out so she bogged down??

You want to go from 112 to 145? That is a MASSIVE jump, my bike will barely run with a 120.

50mm bore, 24mm carb, stock pipe, Hawaiian weather, and I run 105/45 jets.

Always make small changes, I'd start with the pilot, but not all the way from 40 to 50, try something in between.

ok, sounds good. i just read on some one elses post that they had a 145/50 and sounded good, but it will prob. work better as you said, small increments. I have a new pipe on its way will that also affect the jetting?

Yeah you'll definitely run bigger jets than me (Hawaii is very humid so we use small jets) but I can't imagine what a 145 would be like, maybe in a 28mm carb but smaller carbs use smaller jets.

Yes, a pipe will make a huge impact on jetting.
