Variator Backing Plate Question (93 ELite 50 SR)

Post by Jim Moore »

Folks,

I bought a high performance variator from JaingWayne for my 93 Elite 50 SR. I have a couple of questions. First, it has shallow holes but it it does not have threads for the three screws attaching the variator backing plate. Am I supposed to cut those threads myself? I think I read somewhere about leaving the backing plate off. Does that make any sense?

Second, it looks pretty similar to the old one. What is the difference?

Thanks in advance,

why do you want to put on the plate? leave it off and it will perform better.

you don't need the backing plate its just there to keep grease in which honda later decided was not necessary, infact the backing plate actually hinders top speed so toss it and skip the grease
p.s. if you grind down the sharp edges of the ramp plate your rollers will last longer

That's what I'm asking. You just leave the plate off? How do all the pieces stay inside? (Man, that question sounds dumb!)

Keep the plate off and mount variator with the boss and you will see how the pieces stay inside.

Not dumb.......The rollers simply have no room to fall out, after the belt is in place. like evilone said, you'll see when you put it together.
