Ok to run pod filter?

Post by Bugaboo »

Intalling BBK soon and was wondering if running a pod filter instead of stock airbox is safe with a stock carb?
Lost compression on last BBK and It happened after changed filter last year. Thought it might be a contributing factor.

Also could I simply block off part of the pod filter to limit air intake? Possibly with tape or putting paper between the filter and the filter housing.

Sure you can run a pod filter, but you need to upjet the main jet for the BBK and the filter. So you will need to do some plug chops to check the jetting. The reason you burnt up your last BBK when you went to the pod filter was that you we too LEAN because you did not increase the jet for the reduced restriction of the pod filter.

If I remember right I went from a 95 to 100 jet when I switch to my pod filter. Not saying you're not right. Maybe 105 or 110 would of went better

I'm running stock airbox on my BBK. I haVe a 110 jet and seems to be just about perfect. I would be scared to throw a pod on mine without going to a 115 or so. If you were only running a 90 or a 100 that was prob your problem. What kinda mixture were you running?

I run 32:1...for my setup seems to run good. I have a stock S oil pump tied open.

The you are running way to much oil if you have the oil pump working and have 32:1 in the tank.

That's what I have been told too run with the stock Spump and stock carb and muffler. Plug chops are clean and power and top speed are great. I'm running a 110 main. What would your suggestion be Bear? I'm all for .more speed!

You only need a total of 32 to 1 worth the oil and if the pump is putting out 50:1 you really only need less than 50:1 in the tank because 50:1 plus 50:1 equals 25 to 1 in the engine. So all you need is 70:1 in the tank to have 30:1 in the engine. You may also be able to back off on the main jet too, but only a plug chop will tell you that after you get the oil in the tank back down to 70:1. Admittedly I always ran at least 25:1 in my race motors and in special circumstances as much as 18:1.
