transmission gasket

Is the transmission gasket for the rear when you do a gear swap the same on a af16 as a af18 or 27?

I think it depends on what year... dont quote me but i think the trans gasket from the 94-97 sa50 is the same as the af18....the 98-01 sa50 gasket is different because of the changes they made IE no bearings in the cover for the secondaries. I could be wrong as I do not have an af18 engine

The gaskets for the U.S. Elite models are definitely different.

'94 to '98-1/2 = 21395-GAH-000
'98.5 - 2001 = 21395-GBL-870

Someone recently posted the serial number cutoff for the later single-bearing rear tranny cover. I can never remember that shtuff.

Since the perimeter dimensions are the same, both will keep the oil inside the cover. Some therefore conclude that it doesn't matter which gasket you use. I'm not so sure.

The plain bearing needs a constant input of oil to keep from becoming an aluminum lathe. If the gaskets are cut wrong, there is a risk that the oil won't be channelled correctly through the assembly to keep the plain bearing "fed". The twin ball bearings would appear less fragile in this way at first glance, but remember that the transmission is designed to circulate the oil, a little like a pump, perhaps. If the holes in the gasket don't allow for the flow as God and Honda-san ordained, perhaps there's an increased risk of failure - particularly at high speeds where such failures would be especially unwelcome.

I recommend you make double-sure of the gasket specified by the AF18, 27 etc parts fiche and try to get the correct one.

If you have a '98 elite 50, just have your VIN ready when you order from your dealer and they can tell you. It is written in the Honda parts fiche.
