best gears for 97 elite

So heres my setup 97 elite ( hear has an extra bearing in trans) 48mm rumia kit, ct chrome,21mm black oko, zx trans swap , 7 gram rollers, 1500 clutch and contra springs , open pod filter, ruckus rear wheel and 3.5x10 tires front and rear. Im anting to know what the gurus think as far as what ratio i should shoot for in the rear by the way i weigh 140 lbs and am shooting for 55 cruising for trips to lake michigan and have mad take off right now the thing wants to throw mw off the back haha also the mount it is stretched 6in . Any imput is greatly appreciated

hello welder steve. , if 55mph is your goal 8.4:1 gears should be a nice fit.

Well i want to cruise lower rpm at 55 and top out around 65 and weight is not an issue ss i am 140 and am removing 30 lbs from the scoot . I like doing sprints around town we have a couple good ind eighth miles

Thanks a load was wondering how the tire would affect speed, is the 90/90 taller or shorter than the 3.5?

90/90 tire treads sit 3.18" above the rim. The 3.50 is nominally 3 and a half.

Forum members should know that the gears don't make all that much difference in acceleration EXCEPT for "Zero to Whenever the Clutch Fully Engages" - which depending on gears can be 4-12 MPH. This is true as long as the variator is tuned to keep the engine zinging wherever it makes its best power. The only time I cuss at the tall gearing is in slow traffic, like in a long line for a Stop sign. Behind a bevy of Buicks with blue-haired drivers.

Hills, or running at 15 MPH but at a steady speed are no problem at all. Remember the Variator controls the engine's RPM. IF it's correctly tuned, gears only make a difference in Output Shaft (Wheel axle) speed before the clutch engages after the variator maxes out, presuming it can. A lower-powered engine should see the same 40-MPH top speed whether you run 12:1s or 6.9s. The difference will be how much of the variator's travel it can use. A higher-powered engine will run out of usable RPM before reaching its potential top speed if the gears are too short. Does this make any sense?

Yes that makes perfect sence, i understand the workings of the variator, but was mainly wondering about the acceleration aspect as i know weight makes alot of difference in acceleration, so i figure if someone that weighs 100 lbs more than i do is comfortable with the acceleration, with a given gear ratio thanks

in theory yes that's how it should work. But only if thete is no load for the motor and trans to push. A good example of over gearing is when you went from 8to1 to 7.58to1. You went from 68mph to 69mph. 1mph gain on a gear change that in theory suppose to be 5mph faster or topspeed of 80mph@10k rpm. You were no where near that. So your theory which sounds good and makes using smaller gear ratios sound good doesn't work the same. Again over gearing has always been a problem with guys from hawaii that say you should be running these small gear ratios that are ment for full race stroker setups that race teams don't even use because they are to much.unless your making 17+hp on a 72cc motor, you will never reach the full speed the gears suppose to go unless your going down a steep hill or getting pulled behind a car.so for 72cc-86cc no more than 8to1

I believe the reason I gained onlo 1 MPH on the first try was that the engine didnt make enough Power to go faster. It spun about the same RPM, and 69 was all it had. Switched to 26 OKO, more tuning, and got to 71.2.
That said, I agree that theres no point putting up with so much pain off the line and leaving half the variator travel on the table with too-tall gears. Dont forget belt and tiny tire slip as other reasons for not achieving Theoretical max speed.
