Looking for upgrades.

Post by toboggan »

So i have my 1986 Honda Spree NQ50. runs great. but i want it to go faster, i've heard things about a restrictor plate on the clutch. and other things, but now i want parts.

I don't want people to tell me parts they have for sale. lol

I want a list of good parts that i could purchase for relatively cheap.

any and all help is well appreciated!
thanks

sorry but no bolt-on performance mods exist for the spree platform.

check out the how-to's for a few things you can do, shave intake, deck head, wider belt etc to gain a few mph

much better aftermarket for elite 94 and up, can swap in that motor or sell spree and buy elite
projects galore :nerd:

Swap in a different motor like an 87 elite se50 (af05) or 88-93 sa50 (af05)or the easily modified 94-01 elite sa50 (af15). The 94-01 elite sa50 can be built to go fast.

The af05 motors can be built but are harder to find parts for. They can easily hit 40-45 mph with simple mods.

so the 94-01 would be my best bet to go. And is there anything else i would need, or do i just swap motors?

Yes on 94-01 motor if you want to fly and i'm unsure about the swap into a spree. Some other members here that are doing or have done the swap need to chime in...twist

yep, working on this same project myself. from what I understand (which isn't that much :P ) you need the following:

SE50 or Dio motor
SE50 or Dio rear wheel
Elite rear brake cable
A fabricated bracket to mount the shock to the Spree frame

there is a really good thread in this section which has a step-by-step proceedure for doing this. the only thing I think I may have trouble with is hooking up the electrical.

Upgrades really depend on two things:

1) How fast you want/need to go

2) How much you can spend

Now for the Spree you can get it to near 40mph at little cost, just using your time and skills.

But without a motor swap that is your ceiling. Now for the motor swap, a '94-'01 elite engine will cost you at least $150 on ebay. The other motors you can get cheaper, but they can't go as fast.

You can shave the head, port the cylinder, and drill through the baffles in the muffler.

Note that the last option can, and probably will, make the scooter much louder, so don't do that if noise is a concern.

After doing those modifications you will have more power, but not a lot more top end, so you need to either modify the pulley or put a wider belt. Doing this increases the top end but lowers your accel, so you'll have to think about whats important and try to strike a balance that suites your needs.

In the advanced tech docs section there are directions for all these procedures, and you should also check out keithw's 85 Spree, testbed for mods thread that is stickied in this section.
