Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
yay i got the vario today now i have a question about the roller wieghts and the ramp plate this variator had no grease in it but the aero's is packed full, so does the ruckus variator need grease? and if i were to polish and smooth out the rough spots on the ramp plate along with putting in some grease would that make my rollers last longer?

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
Greetings:
The Aero and early Elites used grease, but Honda-san himself deemed the messy stuff unnecessary in later models. The thing that can save rollers is to round off the sharp (Knife-edge, actually) edge on the rim of the ramp plate with a stone or a file.
Using grease without a grease cover and o-ring will make a mess of your belt. It's just not necessary.

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
cool i put it all together and she runs a whole lot faster now i can finally speed! rounded off that edge and then went ahead and put just a dab of grease on each roller to prevent them from getting stuck, they had some flat spots but i went ahead and reused them anyway, i looked at the aero's rollers and they were fine but when i weighed them the ruckus' were 8g and the aero's were 10g so i wasn't sure if that would mess with performance

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
I have taken my variators on all of my scooters with the AF05E and cleaned all the grease out and removed the o ring and rear grease cover with no problems. It seems faster on the top end on some scooters. Besides, once I find the weight I need I will put in some sliders and not worry about the flat spots. Anyone used the doctor pulley sliders? I have used them on my Kymco 250cc, Derbi scooters, and an Aprilia SR50 with success. I plan on using sliders in my Honda scoots when done.
Anyone found other issues when removing the rear plate???
Cool thread we have here.

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
Replacing rollers with sliders is not a gram per gram thing. The sliders have to be heavier. How much, I haven't been able to find out anywhere I've looked, so good luck.ScooterTweaks wrote:I have taken my variators on all of my scooters with the AF05E and cleaned all the grease out and removed the o ring and rear grease cover with no problems. Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
anyone know minimum and max watts the aero50 produces or if it matters?, there is this super tiny 80 watt inverter at harbor freight i want to wire into my glove box, i want to say there was a 50 watt one but i dont remember http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive ... 66972.html
i was also wondering how much work it would be to drop an aero/elite 80 or 125 motor in

Greetings:
Mousewheels is Electron-Expert.
Swapping in a bigger Stock 2-stroker has been done, just a question of sorting out motor mounts, shocks and wires.
However AF16 "Dio" swaps are easier, the engines more modifiable to go faster, plus they're easier both to find and to obtain replacement parts.
Swapping in a 4-Stroker would be Heresy. And slower.

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
96 watts at 5,000 RPM for '85 and newer and only 89 watts at 5,000 RPM for the '83 and '84, so the inverter is guaranteed to kill your battery real fast at anything other than WOT.bc117 wrote:anyone know minimum and max watts the aero50 produces or if it matters?, there is this super tiny 80 watt inverter at harbor freight i want to wire into my glove box, i want to say there was a 50 watt one but i dont remember http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive ... 66972.html

Re: 1985 aero 50 mods
thats alot more than i thought it made is there a method to calculate the watts? like maybe 96/5 = 19.2 watts per 1000rpm so like +/-30watts at idle? 150 watts at 8000rpm?, anyone know of a smaller inverter, and while im asking stuff my fuel gauge is messed up i filled up the tank to the little bar the blocks the pump and the needle was under full then after maybe 10-15 miles i was reading less than half full, another 10-15miles i was reading empty, so i stop and look in the tank and im guessing im about 1/2 full, anyway to calibrate it i pulled the apparatus out of the tank and moved it with the key in and the guage seemed to read accurate to float position, so what bad float, bent arm, what?
