peak temps of 450 would be on a J probe if in fact I've got a Type E? Gauge scale is 0 at 100F.

Around 370. I'd guess VDO has the 0 pt at 100F calibrated into the meter.

I will test Mr. Mouse's learned theories tomorrow night.

370 seemed to be the static temp with 30 seconds' WOT this night. Unknown type thermocouple will be swapped for the TRW type J which tested the same as the original VDO probe last week. I'll tuck it under a head bolt.
