Digital speedometer for $20

Post by elitedio »

Hi Scooter riders,

I put a digital speedometer on the bike. Used a Sigma bicycle speedometer. Calibrated it using tire rollout. Sigma is weird in that you have to convert the metric rollout from km to miles with a 1.61 divider. My metric rollout was 1206, I inputed 749mm It reads within a half mph when compared to the gps at 50 mph.

I had to fabricate my own magnet mount by using a stainless steel bicycle spoke and glued it to the magnet with epoxy. I used a hose clamp to attach it to the hub.

I am next looking to add a tach and EGT/CHT temp gauges.

Greetings:

Very nice job on the speedo and calibration. Within 1% is hard to beat!

You may be aware that there are wireless models which work OK as long as your riding buddies don't also have the same make/model. Sometimes you get your pal's speed instead of your own. The wireless ones usually cost a bit more too.

I am glad to share.
Wheelman as you know calibration is quite easy to do offering adjustment to almost one part per thousand. The one percent is nominally accurate and good enough as tire expansion becomes a bigger factor than 1% at higher speed.

I have always preferred the wired speedo design on my bicycles, as it is more reliable and lighter. I wonder what the effects of the cdi and alternator noise might have on a wireless.

I am in remission as far as cycling goes. For 80 months I pedaled at least one century a month and sometimes 2 or 3 a week. 20 miles would be problematic these days.

I like the size, features and price of bike computers. Good way to get a speedo on our scooters that reads correct and beyond range.

Wow that's a lot of centuries & pedal/drink/eat -- until done. 8) 8)
