spree carb jetting???

Post by one_wierd_guy »

I've been reading this forum site for a while now, and was inspiered to do some work on my 85 spree to make it run better. Now I'm faced with a delema, I've drilled the exaust and when I had it apart to clean the exaust port out, I desided to grind off the rough edges left by the machines on the intake manifold, not expecting it to lean out my mix as much as it did. Now its running hot and I'm not sure what jet to use in my carb to richen the mix back up. Everything is stock except for the drilled mufler and the ported intake, if I remember rightly its a 65 main jet, and now I'm hopeing someone with more expertise and knoledge than me can help me fix my mistake without makeing me spend more money than I absolutely have to. Thaks all.

What you done should not have leaned out the engine. Have you done a "plug chop" to confirm it is lean? If not you are just guessing. Oh and the main jet is a 68.

No I haven't checked the plug yet, but as I was rideing into work this morning, after the first long strech of road it started bogging out till it died, and not like the carb was plugged up either( I've had a lot of expereance with that). And it would take a min. or two to start back up again, and then it would run like it was starving for fuel(again not like a plugged carb), unless I let it sit longer. It did this every 2 min. or so untill I got to work. So if its not over heating what could it be?

Without a CHT or a temp gun to check engine temp you are still guessing. Slowly dying indicates a fuel issue. Sudden stopping of the engine would indicate a temp issue. You have to troubleshot these things, guessing will cost you money and not fix anything. Do a compression test first, then do a plug chop. Something else to try is loosen the gas cap, because this sounds like a plugged vent in the cap also.

thanks bear. Quick question though, on the spree carb, when you screw the a/f mix screw in, does that increase the amount of fuel in the mix, or decrease it? I've been told both ways and want to know for sure what one it is on the spree.

The needle controls air so in is rich and out is lean, but it really doesn't matter, you adjust it for the highest possible RPM, then your adjust the throttle stop to obtain the 1800 +or- 100 RPM or as I do so the rear wheel just does not turn at idle. FYI the needle only effects idle fuel mixture, once you crack the throotle hte needle controls and above 3/4 or so throttle the main jet controls fuel.

sounds like you had a soft sieze, you need to get a larger main jet in the carb.
