Italian stuff vs Taiwan

Post by axo »

Guys..
Do any of you have first hand experience to make a comparison between Polini, Malossi or any other Italian brand VS the Taiwanese stuff?

For example... I already got a 82cc Taiwanese bore kit on my scooter which i am breaking in but i don't know how reliable is going to be.
Would it be too much difference in power/reliability if i had installed a 72cc Polini instead?
What do you think?

:imo:
The taiwan bores can be made just as reliable as the italian ones.

The italian ones just come ready to bolt on with no modification necessary.

But that is just my opinion.

I think the bigger bores require modifications to the engine block, but these 82cc are just "plug and play" :)

Sorry to burst your bubble......but a 82cc does require a bigger boost port in the case.
I know they say "plug and play" but that is just not true.
To do a tiawan 82cc proper, you need to do boost port work on the case.

Look how much bigger the boost port is on the 50mm jug.

Ok good to know. Im no expert at all, but because i installed it and works my understanding was that it was just bolt on.
So... can you point me to an article explaining how to work on the boost port on my AF18? And what difference will it make if i do it with the setup that i have? I also wonder why the guys in Hawaii did not mention anything about it.
Thanks for the info

Ok.. i will take a look at it and pictures. If i am not mistaken, my case actually has the port much bigger than that and it is stock, and it actually matches the 82cc boost port on the Taiwanese cylinder.

The enlarging of the boost port is not 100% necessary, but by not doing it, you could overheat your 50mm kit.

My "dio" motor is a AF16E maybe your AF18E has a bigger boost port

All the shops seem to sell the 50mm kits and advertise them as plug and play. :imo: to sell more bbk's.

I will definitely check the sizes this Monday then. I had heating problems before with another cylinder on my first attempt and
i blamed it 100% to fail installing the right jets (run the engine too lean for long and screwed up the cylinder) but now that you mentioned this, i will make sure the ports match each other.
Thank you

I have an AF16 block, 50mm taiwan bore and uncut boost port. I'm sure there is more performance to be had, but I have no heating issues and am happy with it now.I wouldn't rip off a perfectly good cylinder just just to upgrade, cheap bores are nice to learn tuning mistakes on, I'd hate to pop a nice polini cylinder.
Any bike can run well, some just take a bit more tinkering.

That said, I have ridden a single ring 72cc polini corsa, and it was an animal. But that bike had some nice parts, and was built (and tuned) by a pro. I have more recently raced/ridden other bikes with 72cc polini/malossi setups, but they WERE NOT professionally built. I smoked all of em.

Someday..someday... I will find one of these mysterious Fabrizi bores....and then we can race!

Aluminum? I thought the bore was made of diamond  and the piston was made of titanium and coated in fairy dust.

for no mods the 72 corsa is the best. very strong motor once you set everything up right, its all in the tune. the taiwan stuff can be made just as good. anything stock crank is good.
