Slower after drive belt and tire change?

Post by acm77 »

I replaced my drive belt with a new OEM Bando. Also changed both tires with Pirelli SL26 90/90. I was able to hit 42-43 mph easily with the old belt and tires. Now scooter seems to get stuck at 40. Scooter also accelerates a lot slower. Any ideas?

Greetings:

I've seen this with a new belt for the first few miles. Only theories about why, but it self-correccts generally.

Along with the belt, the minor upgear from the 90/90 might have made it more of a struggle for your engine to accelerate past 40 because it's spinning too slow. Consider swapping a trio of 8.5s with 3 nines and see if it picks up some of its old spunk. You shuold check the 9s for flat spots, too.

Don't forget that warmer air contains less oxygen per unit volume. Everything except a Turbo will lose a bit of power at high altitude or high temperature.

Thanks Wheelman, much appreciated. So I take it there's some kind of "break-in" period for the belt? I don't have any 8.5 but had 8's so I did 3x8 and 3x9 (51 grams). Found no flat spots. Slightly better acceleration but not as good as before with the old belt and tires. But kinda feels like it revs for a few seconds before actually moving forward. I replaced my tires the 90/90 in the hopes of getting a few more mph. Now I'm kinda bummed out because scooter got slower. I'm I asking or expecting too much from a stock motor? Would replacing the center spring and/or clutch springs do me any good? Or should I just be content and just leave the scooter alone. Thanks!

Greetings:

Ride it a while and see if the belt "breaks in". You might try all 8s now, too. Run it on a cool morning and see if it's as fast as ever.
