Spree 101: First mods to do on a Spree?

Post by jawshuwah »

Hi all, I just picked up a Honda Spree for a pretty cheap deal, body is rough but it seems to work pretty good!

I've taken a quick browse over these forums to see the various mods, but I was hoping to find something along the lines of a sticky thread about the basic, first, easiest, "must-do" mods to improve the speed or acceleration of a Spree. I don't want to get into an engine swap or big bore kit straight off, but can anyone tell me what are the little things to do to gain that initial boost? Is there some kind of a restrictor that can be removed? Standard carb adjustments? Air filter?

Sorry I realize that this is all in this forum somewhere, and that with a few hours research it could be gleaned, but I just thought it would be nice to have a quick overview, or a "Spree101"

Cheers

The opening on the mouth of the pipe can probably be bored out to reach its full potential, Sprees dont have variators so you can get that much speed out of them. Your best luck is either a honda elite engine swap, Or a big bore kit and gears from member tazland001 :thumbwink:

there is a sticky. on every page of the forums. it says "wikispreedia is here"
and there are links in there to anything you could want to know.
however, i will copy/paste the "upgrade path" to make it easier.

1. Pulley mod
2. Enlarge stock manifold
3. Mill head / increase compression
4. Enlarge exhaust port
5. Construct expansion chamber
6. Upgrade to SB50 manifold and reeds
7. Bore kit
8. Gear ratio change
9. Upsized carb

Yep, that was the first thing I checked out. However the "getting started" section, which is what I was looking for, is mostly blank, except for "toolkit."

I didn't bother getting into the performance section in detail until after reading through the forums a bit, and then I figured I'd just make a post. The upgrade path looks like what I was looking for, so thanks for that! Maybe someone should update the wiki and add this to the getting started page, since it seems to be appropriate. 8) I'll refrain from doing so as I'm just learning. Anyway, thanks again I'll have a look through this list :thumbwink:

for most people "getting started" really means getting one running.
i do agree though that things could be cross referenced in the getting started section though.
another great link on the wiki is the "bible for scooters" article.

The biggest problem with hot rodding a stock Spree is you still have a non-variated, AKA one gear wonder, and anything you do to make it fast on the top end just hurts the performance of the line even more. Hence without a BBK (Big Bore Kit) it is a losing game.

Upgrading a spree motor is kind of a waste. They are very poor off the line, so its hard to sacrifice anything. A motor swap isnt that difficult and would have bigger gains than anything else and you could still upgrade from there

nobody (that i know of) has done a 4stroke. So you would be the one figuring it out. The 94-01 elite 50 motors, are pretty close to a direct swap. A little bit of work, but nothing too hard. It'll make your bike go from being a complete turd off the line to wanting to wheelie. You'll also gain about 5mph on the top end. With $50 worth of gears, it'll go 45-50 and still almost wheelie off the line. People do drag racing with the 94-01 elites. 70-80mph. Where as the stock spree will never be as fast as the other motor is stock.

People from Hawaii has done a watercooled Elite and radiators are nicely tucked in the front nose with vents. Not sure where you are going to put those radiators on a Spree? Good luck but anything is possible.

If memory serve, some one did an Elite 80 or a 125 a while back. I think they undid the mod because the scooter was stupid squirrelly.

yeah that's what i keep reading! im looking around for answers and if the 4 stroke idea doesn't pan out, i will be going that direction.

My stock spree dio wheelied off the line, And the top spree was around 40. Its a huge difference between the two engines. :2thumbs:
