82cc Big Bore Tuning Difficulties

Post by Throttle-Jockey »

I'm running a

2001 Honda Elite sa 50 / Dio
50mm 82cc Big Bore
Prodigy Ramp and Plate
3 7g and 3 8g OKO Rollers
8:44 Gear
28 mm OKO Carb
52 Pilot / 135 Main
PG Typhoon Pipe

I have been messing with this for quite some time and I can't seem to get the top speed or acceleration as my buddies with the same kit. I know upgrading to a Phongeer Long will give me some gain, (which I just ordered), but it's not enough to explain my loss compared to theirs.

I think I might have to drop my pilot a few sizes, but that won't explain my top speed loss. I'm topping out at 52 or worse.

We say we don't keep secrets, lol, but I know there's things I'm missing.

Anyone have any advice?

Stock Clutch and Springs
OKO 270mm Adjustable Shock
Smoked Out Tail and Turn Lights Assembly

Ouch, i'm hitting 58 mph with stock carb and muffler. Try 55 pilot and 138 main if you have them.

The top speed is low cause the carb is too big ?

:imo: The pilot jet is a tad big

But my guess is that the tranmission tuning is the main difference between you and you buddies scooter.

Play with different roller weights and get a tach for better tuning  ebay has tto tachs for $39.99

A 28mm carb is too big for that setup. Sorry TJ.

I have a 28mm on my 72cc that goes well over 65mph.

I have an 86cc with a 30mm carb that goes over 70mph

So why would a big carb be limiting his top speed CAPT? :eyeroll:

Like I said before...get a tach. Without knowing your rpm's , there is no way you can properly tune for top speed.

CAPT wrote:The carb is too big for that setup. It is not a PG long and there is no way his engine flows that much air. I run the nearly identical setup as him and it does 68 day in and out.. granted thats with a tiny 24mm OKO.

I got rid of the 28mm because the acceleration was soft, and was faster at 3/4 throttle than at full. I would bet he runs into the same issue. If a YZ or CR85 run 28mm carbs and put out something in the neighborhood of 16-18 horsepower, I don't see how something that puts out half that would need that carb. A 24mm would be a way better match to his setup.

That being said, there are a lot of variables that may be in play.. Belt? Timing? CDI?
He has a pg typhoon pipe which is almost exactly like a yms V8 pipe.
A 28mm pipe that works well with a 28mm carb.

If your scooter ran better a 3/4 throttle than full.....it is because you were jetted incorrectly, not cause the carb was too big.

And since timing can not be adjusted, and the CDI has no rev limiter......it comes down to what I have been saying all along.......it is most likely transmission tuning.

But unless we know the RPM's of the engine. It would be hard to say for sure.

I agree that for good gas mileage, a 24mm may be a better match...but acceleration and top speed will not suffer on a 82cc with a 28mm carb.

For acceleration, gas mileage and in this case, topspeed, a 24mm would be better. Why dont you run your 72cc with the 28mm and then try the 24mm and let me know which one is quicker in the 1/8th.

I drag race every weekend. I already know the answer to that.

The 28mm is best for sure. :thumbwink:

my friend red spree has a 72cc corsa 7.5 gears with a pg long and a 24mm carb

I have the same 72cc corsa 7.5 gears with a pg long and a 28mm carb......I have always had faster 1/8th mile times.

On the street I also best him in top speed albeit by only 2-3mph.

But my 86cc with 8.4 gears and a 30mm carb beats both of those 72cc polinis in a 1/8th mile race

So do we think the carb and exhaust match up might be the case? Like 24mm with a typhoon exhaust and the 28's and 30's with the phongeer long?

If by "we" you meant CAPT.

I think your carb if just fine.

What are you going to do with the typhoon pipe when you get your pg long?
