homemade 21mm intake

Post by dun rite »

Awhile back I purchased a 21mm arreche carburetor from brandsnscars (thanks again) And a Malossi reed block and valves from s4patrick (thanks again). The reason for the 21mm arreche, is I want to keep the stock air filter box. Prefer the look to the uni, (just me) also needed the changeable pilot jet, don't want to take the chance of burning up the tazland 50mm bbk since a patient, gentle 400 mile break in. So with the larger 21mm carb versus the 16.5mm stock one, I figured I'd just grind the stock intake larger. Oops, the outside of the stock intake is only slightly over 23mm, not enough room for error in grinding for me. Since I wanted the full 21mm for the new carb and reed block.
So I figured I'll just make a new one, since a quick search online failed to show me anything like what I needed or wanted. (later found just what I needed, but is not in stock)
Through tons of trial and error I was finally able to cut the small pieces of 3/4" alum pipe needed to make the required bends. The new intake flange was way easier even though it was 3/8" alum plate.
Had a friend down the street weld them together, Alas was not able to get the welds air tight. I think due to the fact we used the spool gun welder and not taking the time to set up the tig gun. So After trying a few different grind and rewelds I finally ended up with an aluminum epoxy to seal it air tight. Doesn't look as cool but will work fine. Painted it black anyways.

one more pic of assy with airbox mounted to motor just to make sure it all still lines up. yay

Have installed a #35 pilot jet, and a #140 main.

Just not sure how much of the stock air box cover to open for proper air flow. thought I'd start with what is cut out now ( for bbk, according to inst. in kit) and work from there. Or is there a formula??????? this is all pretty much new to me. Just going to go slow. Still have to get new fuel lines and filter before initial start.

Bear: No, the malossi reed assy is noticeably larger. Not as large as the oko ones but bigger than stock.

Did malossi make that for the af05 or the af16?

thanks wheelman. it is funny actually.

The 35 pilot jet was definately to big, put the 30 in and it does better but then a fuel leak from the old gas line shut me down for a few days. can't get it locally and not going anywhere for a while.

ok it's been awhile. finely got new fuel and vacuum lines. ordered several jets. pilot and main. also had to order new needle jets, and slide. idles and accelerates great with the #20 pilot and the s01 needle. the #3 slide. idle temp around 190-195. Have put in a #120 main but have yet to road test, but responds great on the stand, will have to ride to see whats really happening. Put in 8.5 gr rollers with the oko variator and sef ramp plate. Short distance acceleration is awesome. Have a 1500 rpm center spring and new clutch springs to put on yet but will wait till after confirming main jet is correct. It's taking awhile but am happy with the results so far. Really like the arreche carb.

Greetings:

Nice job on the color, Dawg! Sort of Industrial yet a little bit Artsy all the same. Hope it's Hi-Heat though!
Really nice job with the application too!

Greetings:

Might work astern, but the header part of the pipe easily approaches 700 or more. Enough to light a stogie...
Fortunately, the header is concealed under plastic, so maybe you'll be fine.
