jetting a se50
i just put a # 88 jet in my 87 elite. The service manual says the air screw should be out 1 3/4 turns out but that is for the #85 jet. should i turn it out another 1/8 -1/4?

Nothing to do with each other. But that 1 3/4 turns is a starting point and you need to adjust it per the instructions in the manual.

You want to turn the af all the way in til it wont want to run anymore and turn the idle up so it doesnt die. Turn the af screw counter clockwise until peak rpms are reached. Ajust your idle and your good to go. Dont forget to only ajust it a quarter at a time

Don't mean to hi-jack your thread but I have a question - I've seen several threads in this forum indicating that the 87 SE50 comes with an 85 jet stock. I have an 87 SE50 and an 86 NB50 (same engine I think) and both came with an 82 jet (although who knows what PO's have done). Looking up the part on my Honda Dealer's fiche, it also indicates an 82.
I've tried both scoots with an 85 jet and they seem to run about the same - maybe slightly better with the 82. I guess it's better to error on the side of rich - should I be thinking about changing to an 85?

the 82 jet is for the se50p restricted 11/1 final drive .. the 85 jet is for the se50 unrestricted 10/1 final drive ..
restricted i think it has two restricted... the pipe is one and you need to get the unrestricted one..
and the air filter box has a tab that need to be open the more air you can get in and out the biger the jet ..i think ..
if you dont open the air box and put the unrestricted pipe on the 85 is not going to help with top speed at all it will do is fowl the plug a litter faster .. its a air in and air out thing if one end is restricted you will get nothing in gain
you need to find out what your final drive is that will tell you what one you have..

That's interesting - it does not have a restricted pipe and all the markings indicate it is not the SE50P. But, I have checked and it does not have the 10:1 gears. With a Keli variator it hits about 42-44 top end per the speedometer.
I do have a persistent problem in that it does not accelerate from a dead stop as well as it should (when on the stand, it is also a little hesitant when I snap the throttle) - I might try the 85 jet again and see if it makes a difference.
Where is the tab on the air box that should be removed? Any chance someone has a picture?

i think but i cood be wrong if the pipe is the some size all the way to the muffler it is the restricted pipe

My se50p came with the #82 jets and restricted pipe. hopefully that bit of info will help you. i went with the # 88 from the '88 sa50 and im loving it.

The tab that needs to be punched is only on the 94-01 elite 50 bikes. How do you know you don't have the 10to1 gears? As for your dead stop take off sucking, you can either lighten the rollers by running all 8g or put a 1k center spring in. there is a possibility of the po having replaced the stock carb which would explain the #82 jet.
i'd change the rollers/ weights to see if it helps with your acceleration (when was the last time you checked on them?).
if rollers/weights doesn't solve your acceleration problem, then start tweaking on the other stuff (higher percentage center springs, springs for the clutch, larger jets, etc).
be sure to change one thing at a time so that you can tell if it's a step forward or backward to your goals of what performance you will be satisfied with.

Bringing this back from the dead, installed Technigas pipe with no restrictions, assume I should start with the 85 jet as well? I couldn’t read the jet size on the one that came out, but I started with an 82, I studders a bit on cracking the throttle before it starts to sing.

If stock was 82 I would probably go up to 88-90 and go back down from there. Im not an expert with those pipes but its usually better to start rich and go down. Youre probably going to lose bottom end, thats pretty common. Read up on how to do a plug chop and get that pipe dialed in, then adjust your contra and your clutch springs. You typically have to move your jet up and move your variator weight down to get your engine into the power band. It will take some testing and tuning to get it right.

I started with an 86 and ended up with 84 for the jet, it didn’t seem like it lost any bottom end as I’ve seen before, and you noted as well. Pulls like crazy throu midrange compared to stock. I’ll get the Keli variator and speed pulley on then play with springs. Thinking 40+ is no problem once that is done, hoping for mid 40’s.

Slap on a larger rear pulley for sick launches. Its about a $100 investment with all the components.

There was not a washer restriction on the SE50P pipe (on my 87', and told by others here). You need to use an Aero pipe or something aftermarket. I used the Technigas pipe and picked up 5-6mph. I am not sure what jet was in it stock, supposed to be an 82 but it was not labeled on my bike. I started with an 86 after I installed the pipe and then dropped to an 84.
