SE50 13T gear and countershaft questions

I have a 89 Elite Lx with the AF05 engine and I am interested in swapping the gears to the 10:1 SE50 gear set to get a little more topend. My question is this...

You can still find the 13T primary gear which is part of what I need. The part that seems to be discontinued is the countershaft. The countershaft for the 89 AF05 carries a different part number than the 87 SE50 countershaft. Does anyone know if the countershafts are indeed different, with teeth, dimensions, etc?? I do know it is always best to replace both as far as wear patterns are concerned. But I cannot get the countershaft. I would like to know does anyone know in fact if they are different or not. If they are not different I would be willing to chance it and just swap the primary. If they are different then it is a moot point, because it would not work.

I greatly appreciate anyones insight into this, thanks!!

Yes, the counter shaft is different too. The tooth count is the same but dimensions are different to mesh properly with the.additional primary tooth. If you try to run a 12t counter with a 13t primary, the gears will bind and lock up the tranny. The secondary set is the same.

They are different for sure.

The se50 primary and counter gear are a set, and they are differnt than the se50p.

You should get a full set of dio gears and modify them to fit the se50.

It is very easy to do, and then you have more gear choices.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid of that.

Is there a thread on here that shows how to modify the dio gears? I have a buddy that owns a machine shop, if it machining that is needed I am sure he can handle it. I just need to know what needs to be done.

THANKS

I don't have the link but there are threads about it. You just have to shorten one shaft. Then you have to shim it differently because the aftermarket gear dimentions are different from stock dimensions.

I found the link for the gear swaps. But... there were two different guys doing it two different ways and there was never a definitative "this is exactly how its done" type conclusion. At least in the thread i read anyway. I got the general jist of what needs to be bought and what needs to be done other than the shimming part, that part kind of confused me. i may just have to order the parts and experiment. it will be a little costly to buy all of the gears necessary it looks like.

Thanks for the info. I understand it now. I looked at the cost of new honda gears and they are a little over 150.00 for the three gears. I will keep my eyes out to see if I can find a good used set.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!
