my 1985 spree 50 runs great, but tops out at 30-32mph. Id like to make it go about 40mph without having to upgrade the carb. which big bore kit and what gears should i use? I weigh 165lbs if that matters. Also this spree is bone stock .....what else should i do to it to make sure it stays reliable? Should i run premium? exhaust upgrades?

yup and i actually had it faster when i held her wide open for over 5 min on a long stretch or road but most the time just a hair over 30mph......any help on getting it faster? but not just faster is like to keep it reliable and i dont want to blow her up.... i mean she is an old girl. oh and it only has like 600 original miles on it. and if i put a bbk and gears can i install a kick start? bc the 1985 doesnt have a kickstart.

you can install a kickstart its an easy bolt on. The first step i would take is to get the an upgraded intake and reads. then if you get a bbk and gears you can upgrade the carb aswell. Also AX 24 belt if you do all those yu should be up around 40 mph.

the honda elite sb50p intake and reeds will fit you will have to add another nipple for the oil though really easy to do. AS for the kickstart you can get from members on this site and they pop up on ebay quite often.

The difference between the stock Spree and the SB50 reeds isn't enough to make the expense and work worth the effort. If you get a 1/2 mph you would be extremely lucky.

If you want real improvement, adapt a CT intake and at least an 16mm carb or better yet an 18 mm carb. Otherwise you are wasting your time and money.

FYI, polishing the intake is old school and is now known to be counterproductive. Polish the exhaust if you must polish something.

But if you look at the stock intake there are soo many restrictions..... with a little mill work i could open it up quite a bit. Or am i wasting my time as far as that goes? and my main problem is finding links for these upgrades.

Im in a similar boat as the OP. (stock 87 spree)
I was considering just buying a nice bbk, but I am unsure of whether I will be needing to throw more into the scoot after the cylinder has been upped. Will I need a new crank, bigger carb, new reeds, etc?
Or will the thing run okay with everything essentially stock and a nicely broken-in new cylinder?

this intake http://www.ebay.com/itm/280518183894?ss ... 477wt_1417

this carb http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dio-ZX-Shadow-D ... 057wt_1162

(i wouldnt pay that much for the carb though) Then you will need to get an adapter made.

Rough up the intake with a bluestone make it uniform and maybe take the sharp edge off just inside the intake where it attaches to the carb. I have later 86 87 reeds which I think are sb50 reeds. I ported a spare intake. I also had fibreglass reeds untill they shreded, the stock metal ones work fine anyway.
