Add or don't add wheelie bar

Post by Scooterboy »

Im building a drag moped w/a af16 engine and was wondering if I should stretch the frame 6 in or 1 foot and if I should add a wheelie bar

+1 on stretching, just do it safely. Ive seen people hit their wheelie bars and careen of the side and crash at the race track on their motorcycles.

well... its all in the design and seat placement, o and of course engine power. i could give you examples of frame/engine combos of mine that need/dont need a wheelie bar setup.

I should ask you two, Im building a drag elite, how low should I put my seat and how far from the fulcrum point of the engine mount?

Thoes that have stretched before, what would you say the minimum stretch length would be for a stock frame bike to keep the front planted.
My current build has put me in a position that the front wheel will loose contact with the street under medium acceleration and has suprised me a few times exiting a turn.

Well...

I have done 4 complete Engine and Frame Streches. For me to say one is easier than the other, umm they both require IMO a frame jig of somekind. Yes other forum members have done and have been sucessful but i mock it up on a make shift jig, measure and step back and just and ask myself "does this LOOK correct?" then measure again. I would say DONT be in a hurry!! take your time and make sure its straight ;)

I have plans for making a FULL custom cromoly drag frame for 2013 :) Im thinkin a 5 foot wheel base, 20" seat height, custom cromoloy front forks, 50deg rake, straight handle bars and other fun stuff :D :D

so i know i was just rambling on but hope i gave some insites on what i do

PM me if you have and questions

A wheelie bar if setup correctly isnt going to make you crash.... look at the nhra bikes more weight more power no problems.....

My buddies run traxxis bars on their busas and gixxers, they have been doing drag racing for 20+ years and still one of them has broken both arms, collar bone, and fractured his tibial plateau from hitting the bar and the bar went into a groove. Ive seen a lot of bad accidents at the track from wheelie bars gone wrong, I saw a porsche 911 turbo hit its wheelie bar and spin like a top into the wall, I saw it first hand, got serious quick. A few bikes as well, but the porsche bit it hard.
If its really necessary I say go for it, but if youre just getting into drag racing I would avoid personally. Stretch it and lean forward and get your seat at the right height and placement. Im still interested where everyone places their seat on the drag honda elite frames in relation to the mount.

Thanks for the pic TJ, I was thinking of putting my seat a little further forward and pegs on the back for my feet but that looks good. Usually dont get to see them with out someone sitting on it already so its hard to gauge exactly where it is lol.
