99 Elite SR. Starting to mod questions

Post by coppah37 »

So i picked up another Elite a few weeks ago only this one is an SR.
After putting some 90/90 michelins new brakes and a paint job I have begun the modding.
This was bone stock to begin with.

First thing I did was install a trail tech vapor.
Today i installed a new belt and Keli variator and a BR8HS plug (Slightly colder plug).

The stock weights were flat as S***. So i put in some Polini weights. (3) 7.6 g and (3) 6.6 g.

Well i made it to 36 mph on flat ground and hit 43 downhill 28 uphill.
I weigh 175lbs
My question is how much do the stock variator rollers weigh? So i can tell where I'm at compared to stock
And should i be at a higher speed with this setup or does this sound about right?

This is it the day i bought it

This is the second day of ownership :naughty:

And how it sits now

stock weights are 8.5 if I remember correctly. sock top speed of a stock one should be around 40 according to http://www.motorscooterguide.net/Honda/ ... eSA50.html.
taz 50mm bbk, 51g. rollers,1500 c spring
24mm arreche, #20 pilot, E2 needle clip on lower groove

Nice paint job. Did you do it yourself? Gonna need a new ramp plate, about 25 degrees or so. Vt cycles sells them for $15 but it's been hard to get in Contact with them lately to order parts. I think with that setup and the new ramp plate you should be getting around 40 mph. What's your goal?

Hey thanks yeah I did the paint myself. I already went ahead and asked VT cycle if they had ramp plates in stock but no reply as of yet. But today i swapped out the weights to (3) 9g and (3) 7.6g for a total of 49.8g which is about 1g shy of stock. Flat ground speed was 40mph even though its real windy today.

My over all goal is cruising 55 mph with a little in reserve for when someone says they're going to ride my *. And hopefully keep some low end acceleration

Future plans are Polini BBK (havent decided on corsa or contesta yet)
Better pipe
Bigger carb
8.4:1 gears

60mph is possible, but it gets expensive! I often wonder if I should have just sold the Dio and bought a 150cc Ruckus, but it becomes a personal challenge. I use a Jiang-Wayne 90cc BBK with an 18mm Keihin carb, V8 exhaust, and Athena gears for an honest 60mph. But I've melted the piston a couple of times just by going too fast. It needs a lot more oil in the mix to go fast reliably, and it gets pretty smoky. But it's such a blast dusting off a BMW when the light goes green. I always keep a spare BBK on the shelf just in case, and I go through a lot of belts.

Thought it over and i think the corsa isn't really needed for my street use so I went ahead and ordered the contesta kit from Daywot as well as a 24mm oko carb with CT intake.

Finally got my 72cc contesta kit with 24 mm OKO in and installed. Much more power especially uphill. Still hitting about 45mph top speed at 8300 RPM (give or take) on flat ground. Running a 107 main jet with needle clip second down from the top. Also installed oil plug pump. Runs very smooth with no bogs and highest temp is about 295-298.

Next on the list is SEF ramp plate, rear shock, Gears, Clutch, Exhaust. In that order

Heres some pics

So with the mods listed above i was able to maintain a 45 mph top speed. I took the top end back apart to port the exhaust and work on the transfer ports a little and saw an increase of about 1000 RPMs and a few more mph. Then I bought a PG short and hung on for life. The difference in take off and overall power was night and day. With stock gears I was looking at about 55 mph top speed and it got there in a hurry. Of course this was at about 10500 RPMs  . Last weekend I ended up installing some 9:1 gears and lightening up my variator weights from 49.8 grams total to 42.6 grams total. Also added a red tourqe spring (1000 rpm I think). The result was really good take off with a 65 mph top speed at a cool 9500 RPM. :coolcruise:

This thing aboslutely rips. Easily the fastest scoot in my area that I have seen. Also added some red Progrips and some Koso mirrors for a little bit of style and lower drag.

Pics to come when i get a chance but I just wanted to thank the folks who actually know what they're doing on this site since they help the most!

65 mph and you're not even running corsa?? Seems like people with similar set ups and corsa are maxing out around there so congrats! If you dont mind me asking, how much did you get the pg short for? And what kind of clutch are you using? I'm starting to order all my parts for a similar build. Only difference will be 8.44:1 gears instead of 9:1 and I will also be running a corsa. Look forward to comparing results with you!

d***! 65 is fun! HOw are the 90/90 tires treating you? I assume you are running tubes with them? What model michelin tire are you using? Thanks for sharing, I like the Vapor gauge, I have 2 of those at for my bikes. Trail Tech is good stuff.
