Anyone use this variator in you aero? do you see a 5mph increase in speed like it says? http://www.ebay.com/itm/VARIATOR-PULLEY ... 21&vxp=mtr

Greetings:

A Keli was the very first mod I made on Flash Scootertrash, a resurrected 1987 Aero. It did indeed improve speed, a little, but not sure about 5MPH on top. Midrange for sure was smoother and better. It really came alive using a Malossi ramp plate with the steeper angle. SEF makes a similar ramp plate that can be had for $15 - Money well spent.

where does one obtain this ramp plate? does it work with the stock variator or the keli ?

I know you can get one from VT cycles but good luck trying to get in touch with them. And yes it works with the kelli.

Do a quick search in wtb. A forum member/scooter shop owner was selling some.

a stock elite variator can't be used in a zx transmission. if you change.
I disagree. The Stock variator won't give full-range gear reduction or "overdrive" but it can be used as long as the ZX belt and pulley boss are retained. Then again, you can always slide off the ZX pulleys and go back to S-sized items. Anyway this is an Aero and the AF05 is very tricky to ZX-ify.

Greetings;

Yes the Keli offers improved performance at a great value. It works fine with the stock ramp plate, but much better with the steeper Malossi or SEF version. $55 total, it's hard to beat in terms of performance gain/dollar.

Its a good cheap combination, especially since you dont get a ramp with the keli.

Will i need to get different weights? the stock rollers are in awesome shape but not sure if i will need heavier or lighter weights.

Greetings:

Variator total Weight Load around 50 grams for stock stuff. Stock weights were 10s = 60 tends to keep the engine spinning a bit too slow for best performance, but trial and error in 3-gram jumps is best.

I ran kelis on sc10a and af16 engines with the zx trans with no problem. Im not sure what you had a problem with by what you described but weird. The koso is ok.

see abreen, i told you. nobody gets it this transmission isnt a dio transmission. its an aero transmission.
yea i am confused why everyone keeps talking about dios and zx transmissions i could give 2 squirts about those i would like info on the aero transmission. I have never dealt with anything variated before so some helpful basics about the AERO would be great.

True that, Im not sure about fitment on an aero, it works on a af16, af05e, and a sc10a for certain maybe you should listen to the guy whos tried it on your engine.. Then again wheels did say he ran it on his. Strap you were the first one to bring up elites and zx transmission if I remember correct. I get easily sidetracked at times so pay no attention to me.

Greetings:

Abreen, the reason this discussion came to include AF16 "Dio" engines is that the variator units actually do interchange. Where the Boss rides, your 05 engine has a 12mm crank diameter while the "Dio" is 14mm. The ID of the Variator casting - the outer, Al-You-Minnie-Yum bit - is the same. A different, thicker Boss takes up the greater space between the skinnier 05 crank and the variator's inner diameter. So you can buy a "Dio" or even a Ruckus variator and use it with your stock Aero Boss.

One "trouble" with larger-diameter variator like the Ruckus or Polini-for-Ruckus is that there's not enough space between the crankshaft and the housing around the starter motor. However that impinging metal can be scoured away fairly easily with a grinder, Roto-Zip or even a Dremel tool with a stone. Another issue is that Ramp Plates made for "Dio" have a bigger hole for the thicker 16 crankshaft, so you either have to use an 05 ramp plate, or machine and press in a thin washer to the Dio version to keep the ramp plate centered on the crank.

Using a bigger Drive Face affords a taller "Overdrive" effect which in turn given enough engine power can add several MPH to your top speed. But if that's not imprortant for you, just slide the Keli onto your existing setup and it'll run fine, better than stock.
