84 nb50 aero outer variator sheave ideas needed

Post by harleyracer59 » Sun Aug 04, 2019 9:47 pm

the 84 aero 50 has a variated AB07 engine, the crank bearings are (2)6004. the variator shaft has a 15mm diameter.stock variator boss has a 15mm ID and a 22mm OD. you can run any of the 20mm V. boss OD performance variator with a modified 50cc gy6 boss. drill the V boss ID from 14mm to 15mm. opens up all sorts of performance over stock variator. plus the over all OD of the performance variators are 10-13mm bigger.
only problem I have is looking for a suitable outer variator pulley sheave. it has an OD of 80ish MM. the new overrange variator has an OD of 89-92?mm . cant use the af05/ dio sheave because starter teeth interfere with the cvt cover. so im looking for a smooth semi thin pulley sheave with no bigger than a 90mm OD and any ID of 13 or smaller. (uses same size thread variator nut as the af05s and af18s. any one know or have any ideas or options for me? thanks FTW

whats up man. figured id post here so the info might help others down the road.
a 90/90 tire fits fine with the stock shock, if you have a wider aftermarket shock, you need to put a washer/spacer behind the upper shock mount to space it out. im running an aluminum rim on a dio/ruckus hub. i had to put a 1mm spacer on the axle behind the hub to clear the brake shoe spring.
the rear pulley is the same diameter as the dio zx pulley but the back bearing is different id/od. if you get a spree rear pulley bearing you can use it on a gy6 or dio zx rear pulley to modify it to fit. i just modified the grooves on a gy6 pulley and threw that on with a red center spring.
the dio/gy6 light weight clutch and bell are compatible to the ab07 pulley.
the ab07 has a 15mm variator shaft and a 22mm boss od. the gy6 and af16 dio are 14mm shaft and a 20mm boss od. i took a gy6 boss and machined it out to 15mm allowing me to run any dio/gy6 variator on it. i also drilled the ramp plate out to 15mm so it fit. the usual case clearancing needs to be done like on the af05e to clear the larger diameter variators. but not as much as the af05e needs.
the biggest issue i was having is with the outside variator sheave. its a small diameter., the ab07 uses a different electric start/ kicker setup than the af05 and dio does. so cant swap the kicker covers like you can with the other 2. with a bbk i was able to hit 50-55mph with all the modifications mentioned above, but like others, i wanted more. i took a 85 af05e outer sheave and machined all the e start teeth and used die grinder to clearance the inside of the cvt cover. took a lot of grind and check but i got everything to fit. with the bigger outer sheave, itll do 63ish on flat ground and cruises at a lower rpm. instead of 9500rpm screaming at 50-55mpoh it now does that at 8900rpm.
the ab07 has a final gearing of 7.?? but a stock variator ratio of 2.2:1 1.2:1 so the bigger diameter variator with better ramping of the aftermarket variator fixes all that, im running a suzuki something belt 666x16.5x30. works great. and with a stroke of 39.3 compared to the af05e 37.4, the ab07 has more torque off the line. its faster than all my af05e. and that's with an iron polini sport cylinder for an af01 lead. but getting that to fit is another story in itself.
the ab07 cdi is the best curved cdi honda made. so keep it. don't believe me, try it on your af05e. you'll be searching for another one to put on the af05e permanently. lol .
for a little more timing. notch the flywheel key and advance it a little more. just listen and watch out for detonation ping. retard it back a little if you go too far then tighten the nut and test again.
let me know how it goes. the first gen aero is a great looking scooter. better looking then the second gen IMO.... and you can get a locking glovebox from japan . they sold them for theirs. we got a stupid cubby.... i got 2 of them and a rare front box i haven't put on anything yet. i also have 3 different style fairing sets for the ab07. honda ran that platform from 78-85 that kept the frame and engine but changed the styling. so theyre all interchangeable.

Guess what I just bought :) See if I can tell a difference on my 85' Aero, it's about 1mph slower than my 87' elite with my friend riding it, so I have a really good comparison, and can run them side by side.

lol. watch, the first gen cdi is faster then the rest. close second is the nn50 gyro. the second gen aero cdi doesn't like advancing the timing at the flywheel. the first gen can take a good amount of advancement with no issues for me.
engine wise, the ab07 likes the advancement more than the af05e for some reason. stock or with a bbk.

Good to know, so you really think just plugging that in a mostly stock bike will help, eh? Well, I hope you are correct!

ive swapped them all around just to see whats up. I swapped a variated af05e into my chopper spree and wasn't happy with its performance. thought there should have been more. I noticed them all having different part numbers. except the 84-85 nq50 was the same and 86-87 nq50 had another #. and 84nn50 had a different one than the 85-86 tg50 same motor except for minor tweaks so I labeled all them and started swapping them. had a buddy hanging out so I had him test ride them too and while it wasn't neck snapping differences. seat of the pants dyno you could feel the better acceleration from one to another. ab07 cdi pulled the hardest. nn50 cdi was second. post your findings. I want to hear your thoughts.
