Breakin' Bolts

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

A long 10mm socket is the correct tool to use, provided they are not hopelessly rusted in situ. If you are patient, you may be able to loosen them enough to slip the flange hangers off the studs without breaking them. I'd start by taking the muffler bracket bolts off and seeing if it'll wiggle just a little. Spray liberally with penetrating oil and see if you can get them to move at all. You can alternate loosey-tighty sometimes to get the oil down into the threads. Use a short-handled ratchet and not a lot of force. Sometimes the studs break, which is enough of a pain in the behind. Sometimes the port cracks, which is worse...

Paintin' Pipe

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

It's possible, but only if you don't care how your pipe (and the rest of the scooter) looks when you're done. C'mon, take it off. You know you want to... :)

Studs

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

It's not a lost cause. If you can, install a second 10mm nut (thread diameter is 6mm, I believe) and snug it down tight over the existing nut. Apply a lick of heat to the area around the studs with a propane torch., then thread on the long socket over both and the stud should spin out of the head - hopefully you'll exercise discretion with that super-human strength and not break it off. It really is easier with heat. You can probably even re-use the studs with the doubled nuts to reattach once you've got the pipe painted. If they do break, search broken exhaust studs in Tech Help for more information on extracting them.
