Spree NQ65 conversion thread

Post by Kenny_McCormic »

This is what I have so far from the guy that has done the only know NQ65 conversion.

what it comes down to is that the stroke is not long enough therefore the piston does not reach the top of the cylinder, the ports need to be widened but thats easy, a se50 exhaust will also need to be modded to fit the spree since it does not mount up correctly so you will need to cut and reweld the flanges. what needs to be done is the base of the bore needs to be ground down to make the stroke correct or the top could also be ground. i was able to make one good working kit before i sold all my mopeds. it worked good and along with the custom pullys, aero intake and carb and the wider belts i was able to hit 45 -50 easy... if you feel you are up to finishing the kit off i could send you the diagrams.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

my curiosity is piqued, i've never heard of nq65. is that a stroked spree, an odd combo of oem honda-san magic, or a mere myth in place to encourage those who are without dio engines?? i would like to see more, as i am determined to milk the most out of my NQ before i swap to bigger and better things...

That's a NQ50 engine with a 65cc jug and piston kit fo an '88-93 Elite adapted. It requires machining off the bottom of the jug about 5mm or so to get the piston up to the top of the jug (different deck heights for Spree and Elite pistons) and a custom exhaust adapted from the Elite. This in addition to carb tuning and port matching at the case/jug.

The Elite and Spree both have 10mm wrist pins and the same bolt pattern, which makes the swap possible. This should allow you to run a more aggressive pulley and thus get either higher speed or get there quicker :)

I wonder if the spree and elite share rod end dimensions(instead of cutting jug, use elite conrod)

i'm starting to drool at the prospect... is 65 cc the max or are there bigger bore kits available for the 88'-93' elete?? if not, 65cc would be plenty-o-fun...

The 65cc piston is about the limit, in terms of diameter, you could fit in the case. Anything larger would require a larger bolt circle and *major* modifications to the case.

Past that, you're getting into stroker cranks and other madness.

I'm not sure if that would be easier. I actually have both on the bench right now, I'll make an attempt to measure them.

Any reason why you couldn't take ~5mm off of the top of the crankcase itself? Seems like that would be much easier...

And wouldn't these cuts affect port timing?

I don't know how machining the case would be easier, but if you screwed up milling the case you're throwing away a larger, more expensive part than the jug on a $100 bore kit. And it wouldn't be reversible.

The stroke is the same, so the porting is the same once you get the piston to hit the top of the jug.

Wouldn't take long, just need a lathe and measuring tools.

Does the bottom of the jug need to be trimmed?
