in need of a cheap, yet effective motor swap!! ('86 Spree)
alright, so i just purchased an '86 Honda Spree. it is a pretty good scooter and everything, im just looking for a little bit more power. it currently only reaches around 30mph, and i am looking to change that to somewhere between 60 and 80mph. im pretty new to the scooter culture, so needless to say, i have no idea what would be a good decision for a swap, but it is much needed. i am only going to be able to spend a couple hundred for the swap, so could someone please point me in the right direction towards finding a reliable motor? thanks in advance.

For 60-80 mph you will need to spend much more than a couple of hundred bucks. Maybe around a grand.

Sprees at Bonneville
Greetings:
That Honda-san. He thinks of everything. Made the spree under 90 pounds to be light and easy to hook up to the old Airstream or to carry upstairs to the boudoir for repairs. Also made it cheaply enough so that people would be able to afford and buy it. It's the smallest of the "real" scooters.
Being as it had something under 3 stock horsepower and such light weight, no need to spend a fortune on fancy trailing link suspensions or huge tires and brakes. Simple telescopic fork and 2.50 tires would be fine. Same for the little 80mm brakes. If you're never going faster than 30, they will suffice.
Fast forward from 1985 to today. You wanna do what?! 80 on a Spree?!! If you have to turn or stop at any time from that speed, the first swap you'll need afterward is your underwear.

60-80mph on a spree for $200
Hate to be a pesimistic S.O.B. but it aint gonna happen, unless you somehow find a willing person to donate both a dio motor($300) and about $600 (atleast) in aftermarket stuff... Even then I wouldn't want to take a spree with that kinda power up to those speeds and hold it there very often (bad for the motor, death for the spree)
Sounds like you need to sell the spree and find an old beat up motorcycle on the cheap that needs some work.

Just like Wheelman said you will need to ugrade the brakes as well. When upgrading the brakes for those speeds, everything has to be custom.

The Spree flexes and bends like crazy. It gets weird at 40mph so 80mph would be deadly. If you do end up doing that, be sure to video tape it so we can all get a laugh out of your clutzy demise.

Fastest way to make a spree do 80 is to put it in the back of a truck.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Heck, my Spree can do 120mph when you drop it out of an airplane.Kenny_McCormic wrote:Fastest way to make a spree do 80 is to put it in the back of a truck.

I doubt that water cooled 125cc dio stroker spree can do much more than 80-90mph.

there needs to be a way to mark posts as your favorite, so you can go back and reread them later.Kenny_McCormic wrote:Fastest way to make a spree do 80 is to put it in the back of a truck.
to OP, I guess you got the feeling that people aren't very supportive of your idea. I have to say I'm not either, it sounds like a whole lot of money to spend just to kill yourself. A good stiff belt and a ceiling fan would suffice.
Maybe look into getting bigger better scooter if you want that speed, only problem is the big ones are expensive.
