I hate making it hard for newbies to signup, but maybe a bit more on the registration will fend off intruders?
Maybe a question that people have to answer so that bots can't auto-signup? Something like "What country are our scooters from?"
If it's a direct question about "honda" or "spree" they can probably guess it from the site name, and if it's something like "Your motor is crap, what should you swap in?" then newbies wouldn't know.

Just some ideas, as long as we don't have to fill these things out on every post/search like some forums (I hate that)

Some sites have those squigly words in the box so bots cannot sign in. I dont know if you can put one on here.

Yeah, we've got squiggly words. I just made them harder to read last night.

I struggle with the manual vs. automatic registration. A lot of spammers joined up this part couple of days. I guess they're taking advantage of the long weekend.

Problem I have is that it's nearly impossible to tell a legit account from a spammer account anymore. Used to be easy, they'd put their stupid websites in their profile which was a dead giveaway, as were the names (WOWgold69 is a dead giveaway.)

Look at the new legit account names, though. Better, look at a list of them, and tell me which are legit? "Goodguy," spammer or legit account? There's no way to tell until he starts spamming or asking legit questions.

So I can manually validate, which slows down registration and is ineffective, and delete some spam, or I can leave it automatic and delete more spam.

I'm switching back over to manual for awhile to take a look at who's signing up.

I didn't mean for this to be a complaint about spammers getting in, I really just wanted to make fun of the thread title that the spammer posted.

Wasn't looking to bust your chops noiseguy, I know you try to keep these accounts out and delete them when they get through.

But if we're having a discussion about this have you thought about giving moderators the ability to delete spammer accounts?

I'm ahead of you there; some of the moderators do have the ability to delete accounts and all postings. There's no way I'd keep ahead of the spam by myself.

I do not know how hard it would be to implement as I am too far outside the programing loop. Last time I knew anything php was brand spanking new. Anyways what I have seen more sites do is require a CAPTCHA for all forum posts by default. This is coupled with the option to 'validate' your account, where one puts in a phone number to which a temporary validation password is sent for one to take away the CAPTCHA requirement when the post from their account.

Again I don't know how hard this would be to implement, but it does seem to be what the new trend is judging just by the other forums that I visit.

I HATE forums that require you to fill out a "Captcha" for EVERY SINGLE post. Sure its fine when you first create and account, maybe even for the first few posts.
But contributing members, with accounts that have been here for months and hundreds of posts, should not have to do that for every post.

Yeah, that's a total PIA. There's no way I'm doing that, it would drive me nuts.
