Oil leak

Post by btosi »

Hi All,

I have a 2001 Zuma and over time oil leaks out of the bottom of the air filter housing. l clean it off and a couple of days later it is running down the kick start covers. Not much, but it is annoying. Would adjusting the air screw make any difference? It runs and starts great. Any ideas what to look for would be helpful.

Thanks

No, air screw will not change the oil condition.
I don't know if your '01 Zuma is 2t or 4t.
If 4t, there is a crankcase vent tube that is routed to the airbox (usually)
There is also a crankcase tube that SHOULD be periodically drained.
Look for tube with a plug in the end and remove to drain.
This tube left undrained with tend to blow excess oil into the airbox.
If your Zuma is 2t, oil is a way of life... :urban:

extend the tube if 4t to below the case and to the end of the case that way it stays clean and as MM said

That's a 2T bike.

Is it leaking out of the airbox? If so, betting you recently replaced the air filter and over-oiled it, and used regular engine oil to do it. If so, get clean paper towels and wring out as much of the oil from the filter as you can, then re-install.

The actual oil charge for air filters is very very little... Spree filter uses about 1 gram of oil from factory... almost every owner over-oils foam filters. "Air filter oil" sold in spray cans has a wax that holds it in place... basically it allows you to over-oil but the oil stays in place...

Greetings:

Agree with all the foregoing, but consider that where the oil emerges isn't where it originates. The volume of oil described doesn't sound consistent with a drippy filter, and it should be decreasing if that is the source. A cracked fitting on the oil tank may be leaking, and the drip line just happens to follow gravity down the airbox. I would disassemble and inspect.

Why does everyone want to adjust the carburetor if the engine runs fine?

Thanks all,

It is a 2T and I have in the last few weeks cleaned and oiled the filter. The leak is defiantly originating from the underside of the airbox. I will disassemble and wring out all the oil.

Thanks again.

I know, right? Like turning a screw is gonna fix something haha.

Sometimes these scoots have an oil leak from the 2t oil line that can drip into the airbox. There's a check valve you can get from kawasaki for jet skis that helps keep it from dripping out when it's not running.  Kawasaki PN # 16087-3711
