Done with this version of spree!
Yesterday was my first time taking the spree to work after breaking in the 44mm bbk. Seemed to be alright. Today after about the 4.5 mile mark the motor seized. I'm sick of this sluggish turd. Gonna dig into it tonight. I'm definitely not putting a nq50 motor back into this frame. Might pur a different motor in this chasis but I'm having a heck of a time finding a se50 complete. Might just get rid of the whole thing and look for something else.

just to clarify, I'm not knocking taz's bbk. I don't know the root cause yet. I applaud taz for his efforts.

This is not making me feel great. I just installed my 44mm BBK last week and am still breaking it in. I hope this does not happen to me...
Seems like break-in takes forever! I putt it around the block (about 8/10ths of a mile) once or twice a day at barely any throttle and am still only down to half a tank. This after doing the idle/cool down a bunch of times as well. This is the time I wish it was a little less efficient

i found that the break in was easy. Didnt top 20 mph the whole time. Went through a full tank of gas, then opened it up a bit for the next tank. I did find that even after 500 miles on bbk, i was soft seizing at wot for any more than 1 min. After the odnix advice of adding 2 extra oz of oil to each tank of gas, i have had very little problems and run at 35 mph every day. I now have over 1000 mi on bbk, and have only soft seized once since adding the oil to the gas. That was on a very hot day wot down a big hill doing 40+ mph. Should have know by the sound of the engine something was going to happen. After a soft seize i usually start her right back up and tenderly ride her for 5 minutes or so. I am all for the taz kit. Wish I had the cash for the 48 mm to give me more start up power. (also replaced gears with Taz and went with 10X3 tires. Once I hit 10 mph she takes off like a bat out of *.

Cat, can you remember what jet size you're running? With stock or sponge/other air filter? This info might help the next would-be BBK convertor. Taz should jump in here and deliver all the feedback he can for the 44mm kit. This might help us all guess what jet might be needed for the 48.
Jetted correctly and with a realistic compression ratio, WOT for a minute or a month should be sustainable. Only over-rev situations, like long steep downhills, can shoot down this theory.

i think the jet im running is the 85 that taz sent with his kits in dec 09. I am running a sponge filter (cut from a 2 cycle lawnmower filter to fit the stock airbox with 5 1/2 holes drilled into the back of the cover of the box. Taz may correct me on the jet size, but it is what he provided and it works well. I took his suggestion on the airbox with the holes in it vs purchasing a uni filter. This was done because i had heard that the spree is much louder with the uni filter on it. if there are any advantages to the uni, i would love to hear them.

The trouble with the Spree carb is that the ever-important low-speed jetting can't easily be altered. Big Main can save the day as long as the throttle's open, but a lot of seizes happen when you shut it down...

went out to look at it and it started. Would this be considered a soft seize? I added oil to the gas and went for a ride. All seemed to be good. Wonder if my oil pump is putting out enough? I know it is putting out some oil. I'm thinking of using 32:1 premix gas along with the oil pump. thoughts?

32:1 premix and pump would be too much oil. 32:1 is the final ratio that you should try and achieve. My guess is your jetting is lean. Turn your a/f screw in a little for a little more off throttle fuel.

just got out of the garage doing my investigation. There was no oil in the line between the oil pump and carb. I pulled it and plugged it. I also noticed the oil tank was still plump full which I filled 3 tanks of pre mix fuel ago.
