I figured out a way to measure the level of your float if you do not have the special tool in order to check the specs if you have changed floats recently or if you are having a problem with fuel overflow. This procedure is simple and can be applied to any type of carburator. For plastic floats this will check if it needs to be replaced or for aftermarket floats with metal tabs you can bend to adjust the float height.
1. Take a piece of stiff carboard and cut this U shape so that each side will make contact with the carburator body on each side without touching the float or jet areas.
2. Once you have cut your tool to the proper fit, measure starting at the bottom where the cardboard touches the carb body and mark on each side of the tool the measurement that your repair manual states the float level should be (for example SA50 88-02 float height is 12.2mm)
3. Tilt the carburator so that the float lightly sits on the needle valve spring and place the tool over the float and flush with the carb body as shown. The marks you have made should line up with the "bottom" of the float which is now the top as you look at it. Adjust the tab on the float if it is metal till the float lines up with the marks on your tool. Your float level should be within spec

Re: Carb Float level
Be sure to remove any gaskets before making your final measurement and float adjustment. The Tool must sit flush with the carb body on each side of the float.

Re: Carb Float level
They have been making tools like that for better than 100 years to heck float levels. Look on page 4-8 of the Spree manual and it shows one that can be used on most Keihin carbs.

Re: Carb Float level
Greetings:
Come to think of it, I've never double-checked the level on any of my several OKO carbs. Is 12.2mm in fact the correct float level?
