What type of spark plug do I need?

Post by Trafficjamz »

Can someone explain the difference between 6's 7' and 8's

What is the difference between a bpr8hs and br8hs?

What heat range is best for long distance riding?

What is the best plug for drag racing?

Thanks in advance. :thumbsup:

Bear oughta be able to tell us exactly what ya wanna know in all honesty..

as far as racing goes..i dunno if i'd run a hotter plug, (6) cuz man, that puppy would get HOT! i changed to the 8 cuz even with the break in premix, it was runnin lean a little. so that means when ya drop down to regular mix, its gonna lean out WAY worse..then..POP!

odin, what kinda compression did your 44 bbk have? did you have tabboggan do the head?

i'm curious to see how much comp. his heads have..cuz mine ened up with 145!! assuming higher comp motors need better fuel octane N such to prevent detonation and complete chaos. see thas why i'm waitin to see what bear says about my compression, along with wheelman. also waitin to see what wheelman has to say about CHT's. cuz i kno how hot my heads runnin, next is to determine wether or not i need to keep goin colder. Advanced auto parts can get ya just about EVERY BPR#HS plug on the market.

i have not done a compression check yet. but i have the 85 head on mine which increased the compression from the get go. and yes tobboggan did the machineing for me. ill get the compression check done this weekend as im going to clean my carb and rejet to 88 and put in some paper gaskets around my carb and insulator i think i may have a leak not sure.

R stands for resistor. which doesnt matter for our scooters. and you will find some have BR and BPR, that is the difference in the ceramic insulator. BPR has a fat insulator and BR has a thin insulator. ill post a pic tomorrow.

The NGK site has explanations for most of these question in Tech Support.

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_suppo ... p?mode=nml

Here's the heat range chart.

http://www.sparkplugs.com/glossaryImage.asp?imgID=430

For racing and that's what these BBK qualify as you need to be educated in racing plugs. Try these;

http://www.ngk.com/sparkplug411.asp

and

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/products/racing/racing.asp

and here;

http://www.federalmogul.com/en/Aftermar ... acingPlug/
For all gasoline racing applications, colder is better in all cases, unless you run into fouling (unlikely with a properly done setup).

Bear45-70 - good info, added links to the Wiki topic. Also added the plug reading chart you posted a while back. Thank!
