Warm Up ?

Warm Up ?
So do you let By-Starter scooters ( Spree) warm up at all before riding ?
With my RD400 I feel the jugs until warm to touch ( I also have a cylinder temp gauge grafted on )...but that bike is a whole different animal than a 50cc scoot .
I have to admit it seems to run great from dead cold , right through the warm up i can WOT at both no problem at all
Just want to get your ideas

Re: Warm Up ?
Greetings:
Riding off on the bystarter shouldn't be a problem if everything is working OK. Going WOT with a cold engine might not be such a good idea. The Spree top end may be a little toucher than the RD's, but it's good practice to let the heat distribute before you flog it. The cylinder base being colder than the top can theoretically lead to some warpage. YMMV

Re: Warm Up ?
So let me get this straight - when the jugs are warm to the touch, she is good to go?

I feel her jugs until she's smokin' hot........making sure the base comes up to temp and is well lubed.......when I'm flogging away, I'm not risking the chance she's gonna warp.......ouch !!................. ........for bradmeehan

sounds like common sense with the warm up

Re: Warm Up ?
that and you want it warmed up before you put ride it. riding it cold and loading the piston and rings while cold is asking for the ring lands to stretch and wear the rings quicker. the heat makes the metal expand a bit more which tightens up the clearance of the ring ends and piston to cylinder wall clearance of where it needs to be.

Re: Warm Up ?
Its a spree there built to last, Warm or cold you could drive that thing for a 100 years underwater and I bet it would still run. Yes it is good to wait until it warms up but I didnt worry about it with my spree engine. With my dio engine how ever I give it some time for the cold blooded ***** to wake up.

Re: Warm Up ?
I rate the warm up, as I am running the alternative plug (BPR8HSA as per manual) for extended high speeds, and its an ugly pig if I just jump on and flog it for the first 3 miles. All it takes is a couple minutes idling away and I can usuall hear the bystarter cut off and the revs drop slightly and thats warm enough for me
As Wheelman says, YMMV

Re: Warm Up ?
I always let any air cooled engine warm up before I go motoring with it.
