Re: choke issue
When was the last time that you cleaned the carb?odinxxix wrote:i have an fa50 and for some reason i have to use the choke on the bike and have to hold my hand over the carb to start it. is there an adjustment or is my carb that far out of adjustment.?
Also, do you have the factory air cleaner on it?
Re: choke issue
I'm with Allow1 on this.
If you don't have an aftermarket air filter I'd say most likely a blocked pilot jet or small air leak in your manifold.

Re: choke issue
Is it a choke or an enrichment circuit? Probably a dirty carb.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
Re: choke issue
im not really sure which system it is. all i know is the its a lever that has r on one side and s on the other. linnes are good and i cleaned the carb about 2 weeks ago. i havs part of the original air box but no filter inbetween at the moment i have put a (dont laugh guys) but i used a worn out wash cloth and it runs but still have to cover with my hand and open the lever. i found a breather at advance auto that will work. hope this answers some questions and will help you help me. thanks guys.

It is a choke, it has a lever on the left side that says choke. You flip it with your thumb. I only know because I have a 90 FA50 in the garage.
Re: choke issue
Do not waste your money on a new filter from advance, you will not gain anything and it will prolly run worse. (Anybody agree with me on that?)odinxxix wrote:im not really sure which system it is. all i know is the its a lever that has r on one side and s on the other. linnes are good and i cleaned the carb about 2 weeks ago. i havs part of the original air box but no filter inbetween at the moment i have put a (dont laugh guys) but i used a worn out wash cloth and it runs but still have to cover with my hand and open the lever. i found a breather at advance auto that will work. hope this answers some questions and will help you help me. thanks guys.
Unless it is modified, I would run nothing but the complete stock air box. Do you have the complete air box minus the filter or?
Re: choke issue
no i dont have the complete air box, i am missing the outer cover.

Re: choke issue
Don't run your moped in that condition. You are likely to seize it.
What you describe suggests that your "filter" setup is not restrictive enough and is causing the bike to run too lean - this is POTENTIALLY DAMAGING.
If you cannot obtain a factory original air filter box and filter, you will need to buy a proper pod filter (like a UNI) and completely re-jet the carb to suit the filter setup. Do a search on this forum and learn about plug chops.
You can download a manual for the moped here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/3829256/1980- ... ice-Manual
The carb is probably a Mikuni VM12SH. You will need that information to find suitable jets for it. Hopefully the pilot jet is not like the Spree/Elite and can be upjetted.

agreed unless you know what your doing. i did make a success out of using a craftsman airfilter but TONS of trial and error and it took me FOREVER to get it right.
